Spot clean only with a damp cloth or use a dry brush. Mix a mild detergent in a bowl in small quantities, dip a used brush/toothbrush and smear the small area with soap. Do not leave soap, clean the surface with a wet cloth instantly. Do not let any stain or spot stay on the placemat or runner for very long. Remove stains right away. The longer they stay, the more difficult it will be to get them out.
